Economic Potential of the Donetsk People’s Republic: Aspects of the Integration Process

Abstract
The article examines the economic condition of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) prior to its incorporation into the Russian Federation and analyses the resource potential of the republic, which underpins their mutual integration interests. The indicators are provided confirming that, from the time of the DPR’s formation until the beginning of the Special Military Operation and subsequent territorial unification with Russia, the economy of the Donetsk region underwent significant distortion and was virtually devastated. The volume of production within the territory of the republic decreased by 70%, with the economic potential reaching only 45% of its pre-war level, budget planning was absent, and the population declined by nearly half. The analysis of the DPR’s resource potential has been conducted in the following areas: raw materials production, educational and scientific resources, infrastructure, and human capital. The article highlights the initial economic achievements of the republic following its territorial integration with Russia, thereby confirming the potential for the ongoing integration process
